Formation of Mitsubishi G3M2 Type 97 attack bombers, Model 22 "Nell" of Mihoro Kokutai. Aircraft are camouflaged brown and green w/gray undersides.
The Nell could carry 800kg of bombs or one 800kg torpedo carried on racks externally.
Aircraft were armed w/one flexible 20mm type 99, model 1 cannon in a dorsal turret and 2x7.7mm machine guns located in blisters mounted on each side of the fuselage, another located in a retractable dorsal turret and another 7.7mm located in cockpit windows.
Sixty G3M Nells took part on the attack against the British Capitol ships Prince of Wales and Repulse, this was the first time Capitol ships were sunk at sea by aircraft.
Most surviving "Nells" served until the end of the war. Replaced by the G4M "Betty" they
served as second-line aircraft glider tugs, bomber trainers, and as maritime reconnaissance aircraft fitted out with search radar. Others were converted into transports and code named "Tina"
