In 2005, the wreck of a B-17 was found in a remote area of Cape York in the extreme north of Australia which might be this plane.

This aircraft, B-17F-1-BO "Pluto" with serial number 41-24384, became missing while on a mission between Port Moresby on New Guinea island and Australia on 26 Mar 1943. All aboard, including Brigadier General Howard K. Ramey, were never seen again.
