Unfortunately, Utah's last task had been to serve as a target note the protective "doghouses" in place over the 5" guns. This precluded their use against the attackers.

U.S.S. Utah had been converted into a
training and target ship, that was known to
the Japanese pilots, whose instructions were
to ignore the ship,but in the heat of battle
it was forgotten.
